If knee pain is changing your walks, tennis, travel, or time with family, understanding your options matters.

This webinar is for people who have been told knee replacement may be their next step, whose injection relief wore off, or who want a careful explanation before making a decision.

Look beyond cartilage.

Understand why the bone beneath the cartilage, meniscus, supporting tissues, and knee mechanics also deserve attention.

Put options in perspective.

Explore rehabilitation, PRP, and bone marrow concentrate, including their evidence, limitations, and the importance of patient selection.

Know what guides the decision.

Learn how symptoms, examination, imaging, previous treatment, and your goals guide recommendations, including when surgical evaluation may make more sense.

You do not need to arrive with a treatment decision. Start with the questions worth asking.

A whole-knee perspective. A personal approach.

Your knee is more than cartilage. The cartilage and bone beneath it form a connected unit; the meniscus, ligaments, and surrounding tissues also matter. Imaging is one part of understanding your symptoms.

Meet Dr. Deborah Westergaard

Dr. Westergaard is double board certified in Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine. She completed an ACGME-accredited pain medicine fellowship at Texas Tech under Dr. Gabor Racz and has practiced medicine since 1989.

Her work includes ultrasound- and fluoroscopy-guided procedures and Regenexx care. She was recognized as a D Magazine Best Doctor in 2023, 2024, and 2025.

“Treat the patient, not simply the image.”

Dr. Westergaard personally reviews MRI and ultrasound findings alongside your history, examination, and goals. An evaluation helps determine whether a nonsurgical option, further rehabilitation, or surgical evaluation is appropriate for you.

Questions about knee replacement alternatives

Is there an alternative to knee replacement?

Some patients have reasonable nonsurgical options, depending on their symptoms, function, examination, imaging, and previous care. These may include rehabilitation, activity changes, and selected injections or orthobiologic procedures. When arthritis substantially limits daily life despite appropriate care, knee replacement may be the more appropriate option to discuss.

Does “bone-on-bone” mean I need knee replacement?

“Bone-on-bone” describes advanced joint-space loss, but that phrase alone does not determine when surgery is appropriate. Your pain, function, examination, imaging, and response to prior treatment all matter. Advanced disease can limit nonsurgical benefit; an evaluation should explain realistic options, including when surgical consultation makes sense.

Will this webinar tell me whether I’m a candidate?

No; individual candidacy requires a medical evaluation. The webinar explains the questions that guide that evaluation, including symptoms, examination, imaging, health history, previous treatment, and goals. It can help you prepare for a consultation with Dr. Westergaard at Regen Experts in Dallas or Plano.

What is the difference between PRP and bone marrow concentrate?

PRP is prepared from your blood, while bone marrow concentrate is prepared from your own bone marrow. They contain different mixtures of biological components and involve different collection procedures. Their evidence, risks, and potential uses differ; neither should be presented as a guaranteed way to regrow cartilage or avoid replacement.

How long does PRP last in the knee?

There is no single duration of benefit that can be promised. Studies assess outcomes at different intervals, and any symptom improvement varies with arthritis severity, patient selection, preparation, and treatment approach. Some patients experience little or no benefit. Ask how follow-up and ongoing rehabilitation would be planned for your knee.

Can these procedures guarantee that I avoid surgery?

No; rehabilitation, PRP, and bone marrow concentrate cannot guarantee that you will avoid knee replacement. Results vary, and some patients ultimately need surgery. The purpose of evaluation is to determine which options are reasonable for your knee now, with a clear discussion of limitations, risks, and alternatives.
